There’s something thrilling about a thrift store. You rummage through stacks of dusty vinyl records or a fresh box of hand me down clothes, pieces obviously well-worn and weathered from time. You yank out an accessory, perhaps, and march triumphantly to the counter and slap down a $5 bill. Beaming, you set off for home with the object clutched tightly to your chest. Uncovering a new treasure of her very own, Melbourne singer-songwriter Gretta Ziller honors the rustic nature and quality of used and borrowed things. “Second Hand,” a collaboration with Andrew Swift, churns out her own memory of first landing in a new town and not having any winter wear. So, she did the obvious and hit up Savers and discovered an eight-dollar denim jacket. “No, it ain’t all bad when all you have is second hand,” they sing in unison, the warmth glowing from inside out. It’s an enveloping performance and just might make you appreciate the little things in life in an exciting way.
“Second Hand” is the first taste of new Ziller music since 2017’s Queen of Boomtown and her first collaboration with Swift.
