Premiere: Hannah Connolly captures brilliance with ‘Party is Over’ live video

A celebration is winding down. The chatter has dissipated from a roar to a soft buzz, and the quiet seems to seep in from all directions. An adoring couple slips away to steal an intimate moment together. That’s the essence of Hannah Connolly‘s new song “Party is Over,” a delicately-sketched portrait pulled from her personal life, as well as those relationships splashed across the silver screen.

The fourth single to her forthcoming Shadowboxing album, “Party is Over” finds Connolly yanking in the reins and allowing the listener to find their own sense of calm amidst the racket of everyday living. “Being with you now / Feeling at home in your arms,” she sings, an intoxicating sweetness dripping off her tongue. “You laugh like an old-time movie / I’m sailing away on your charm.”

With the accompanying video, filmed live in Idyllwild one cool night in June, Connolly allows the song to crackle and shimmer, as brightly and majestically as the sunset cresting the horizon behind her and the band. They had just finished recording “Meet You There” when “we decided to try to capture one more song,” Connolly tells B-Sides & Badlands.

“We took a short walk down the slightly overgrown trail, quickly set up, and played through [this song]. As the sun was making its final descent, it got cold fast, and we could see our breath,” she continues. With director Ryan Neal Cordwell at the helm, what the creatives capture is nothing short of magical.

“After the cameras cut, [Ryan] shouted, ‘And that’s a wrap!’ We all cheered and celebrated because it was the final capture of three days spent making live videos together out in the woods,” she says. “That was a really special memory for me. To be able to feel these songs come alive in such beautiful places with friends was a highlight of that year. I love how fitting it was that ‘Party Is Over’ was our final performance that night.”

Connolly’s Shadowboxing arrives everywhere on March 1.
