Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones

‘Not My Friend’ has an immediate beat to it that catches your attention almost instantly. With a soft voice like raindrops on a window, Hannah Crowley draws you into the world she paints for us. As her voice harshens, she unravels the true depth of emotion she’s battling. Anxiety is personified as an unwelcome “friend” who she can’t seem to get rid of. “You’re not my friend/The days keep repeating/I try to keep breathing/I don’t want to see you again” she sings, almost sounding like waves lapping on a beach. The song has a strong focus on rhythm and bass to emphasise the repetitiveness of the emotion. Crowley’s voice and layered harmonies carry the melody of the song throughout – she’s a fantastic singer, able to convey emotion with ease. This is definitely a song I’d recommend you listen to a few times over.
