Some of the most fascinating songs are those which don a surprising perspective. As folk musician Hayden Everett demonstrates with “Kennecott,” written from the perspective of an old 1900s mining town (no, literally), you can uncover a rich life lesson. “It’s easier to let you down,” Everett sings between guitar flakes. The town, as one might expect, has deteriorated and crumbled, and much of the sorrow comes from a disregard for the beauty that once was by human beings. We can be the worst, especially when it comes to taking even the mundane, yet still stunning, things for granted.
