Taste Test: HOAX upend the ‘Unamerican Dream’
The R&B master duo dethrone convention with their new slow jam.

The American Dream as presented in Home & Garden or even Good Housekeeping is a figment of our imaginations. Or at least, a lasting remnant from an era so far removed from our own that it seems silly. Blog staples and R&B smooth-talkers HOAX flip the script, so to speak, on chasing things that seem so damn frivolous. We’re rats chasing cheese that doesn’t actually exist. On “Unamerican Dream,” deceivingly smooth to the eardrums, the duo of Mike Raj and Frantz Cesar hold on for dear life as they seek out the things that at first appeared so enticing. “You love the feeling / You can’t let it go,” they wail, letting all the angst and desire drain out. In true, unapologetic HOAX fashion, they glue together hefty lyrics around production that seems to sparkle and dazzle the senses.
“Unamerican Dream” follows on the heels of “Could” from earlier this summer.
