Taste Test: Holden Laurence tries to tame the ‘Wild Horses’
The indie-rock storyteller crafts a stunning, tragic story song.

Imagery of wild horses evokes a sense of whimsy, a feeling of the wind tossing your hair and nothing but the countryside before you. There’s great strength – and just as much sorrow. Indie-rock singer-songwriter Holden Laurence stages a harrowing story song with his own version, also called “Wild Horses,” in which a young girl finds herself trapped in an abusive home. “Wild flowers bring the rain,” he sings. Even Laurence’s heart is purple and bruised, a narrator indebted to the story as much as our protagonist, whose life is perilously close to being extinguished through other people’s tumultuous miseries. Guitars wash over the senses, and we may never know the true ending to such tragedy.
