Taste Test: ISLA explores long distance relationships in ‘Break the Fall’

South African solo pop artist drops an ethereal exploration of love and loss

Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones

Often in songs, there is a vocalist, a songwriter, an instrumentalist, but ISLA does it all, from singing to composing. The inspiration for the song is also wholly ISLA’s, as it explores the experience of being in a long-distance relationship that has broken down. The song is beautifully crafted, with simple lyrics that convey a powerfully bittersweet uncertainty. “And I don’t quite know/When I’ll be okay/Time moves on/Here I’ll stay”. With reverberating harmonies and overlapping vocals, “Break the Fall” sounds as powerful and full as if it was sung by a choir. The synthy instrumentals are expertly structured and seal the ethereal atmosphere of the song. ISLA definitely one to watch going forward!
