It’s not the trials and tribulations that define is. It’s our reactions to them. We can either writhe and rub our fingers in the bile that seems to flood up to our waist, or we can reach just overhead for the olive branch and climb out. Seattle quintet Ivan & Alyosha ⏤ made of Tim Wilson, Pete Wilson, Ryan Carbary, Tim Kim and Cole Mauro ⏤ extract their own expeditions through and out of the darkness for a gloriously gospel-fueled new rollick. “Everybody Breaks” collects up the shards of the past, as much as their bones strewn along the dusty, deserted highway, and reconfigures the pieces into a brilliant mosaic. The sun penetrates and soaks every inch, and ultimately, they rally even the most downcast and tormented of spirits to get up off their knees. “I been looking for the answer / Don’t help me find the cure to my cancer,” rings as a brutally empowering alarm, operating as both a literal and metaphorical road map.
“Everybody Breaks” is the first taste of a new album; details TBA.
