Performing covers requires just as much creative energy as writing songs. With his second covers collection, Jackson Breit tries his hand at rearranging numerous pop songs of yesteryear. Covers 2 goes down like a shot of whiskey, both burning and soothing. He frequently threads together two songs, blending their stylistic and musical identities into his own tasty elixir. Some of the standout moments include combining “Chop Suey!” and “Creep,” and it just works. It’s like experiencing the songs for the first time again.

From adapting Latto’s “Lovin’ On Me” with Steve Miller Band’s “The Joker”, to fusing “Blinded By the Light” and Lil Wayne’s “Mrs. Officer,” there’s a sexy intensity to the way he builds the melodies to fit his voice. It’s equal parts seductive and addictive. Breit slides so effortlessly over the melodies that there’s a creamy byproduct that makes the listener swoon and fall to their knees.

Jackson Breit knows exactly how the mechanics of melody, structure, and delivery fit together to culminate in songs that you could just die for. It’s not enough to cover a song. You must inhabit it and perform as though it’s your own original. With Covers 2, Breit delivers a set worth putting on repeat this summer.
