Taste Test: James Stephen confronts the past with ‘I Missed That Train’
The indie-folk storyteller makes peace with missed opportunities.

We all live with regrets. The trick is not being trapped by them. Instead, we confront them and then tuck them away for safe keeping. What is done is done. Indie folk singer-songwriter James Stephen does as much with his song “I Missed That Train,” a plaintive tune with a deep-chested growl. “I felt so lonely,” he bemoans. “I felt so distant / And I know it could happen again so instantly…” His lyrics crackle and pop, like placing a new log on the fire. So many opportunities may have whisked by him already, but he doesn’t succumb to what ifs and should-have-beens. He simply gazes into the future to make sure he’s ready and equipped for what comes next.
“I Missed That Train” is lifted from his new EP, ‘Til It Comes Around Again…, out everywhere now.
