Coping mechanisms come in many forms. Whether it’s the bottom of a bottle or slipping from the covers night after night, tortured travelers seek out anything to numb the pain. Calling to the latter, Orange County Americana-blues five-piece Jeramiah Red sews together a downhearted spinning top for one lonesome soul who turns to sleeping around to find some sort of escape from life and its troubles. Inside the bright, jaunty arrangement of “Broken Bearings,” which gives frontman Wes Dickson ample room to exhibit his unnaturally powerful voice, the band unzips the emotional weight with precise consideration. “That sun don’t rise just where I lay my head,” Dickson’s voice crawls up the back of the head moments before it erupts into the night. Alongside band mates Ian Cullen (lead guitar, vocals), Travis Ruiz (harmonica, percussion), Tim Miller (bass) and Garrison Giali (drums), Dickson arrests the senses with an undeniably moving vocal punch.
“Broken Bearings” is lifted from the band’s new self-titled EP, out everywhere now.
