Love is a complicated creature. It often makes little sense. Folky singer-songwriter Joel Adam Russell wrangles contrasting emotions amidst his own dalliance with romance on a new song. “Borrowed Time” weeps as a classic country tune is likely to do, and his voice is of a swarthy, reedy timbre and beckons you along his lonesome sojourn. “It ain’t forever / Nothing never is / Darling, you’ll be gone with the rising sun / But tonight, you need to hold someone,” he sings, his voice quaking. Russell lingers on the melancholy, if only for a fleeting second, but he comes to accept love is quickly, relentlessly fading.
“Borrowed Time” samples Russell’s forthcoming EP, expected later this year.
