Heartbreaks play like homemade reels in their head. “When I Got This Place” sees Joh Chase replaying particular moments over and over again, letting the vintage, yellowed images flash in their mind in brilliant montages. “Don’t need a lover in Los Angeles / Everybody’s here for show biz,” sings Chase. Their voice vibrates through a throwback mix of rustic guitars and drums, pulsating over the melody with frenetic ease. There’s a smoothness to the performance that deceives the senses. While they certainly could be gloomy about the state of affairs, they’re frank in their presentation, making it a far more universal experience.
