Really, life is nothing more than a serendipitous web of random moments colliding into one another. All you can do is let it wash over your life like the ocean lapping in foamy stripes along the sand. Pulling from a true story, British folk storyteller Jon Kerr delicately sketches a romantic tale of a couple happening upon one another at a bench constructed to the late woman named Gill. So, brooding on such an encounter, which likely would never have happened otherwise, Kerr crafts a timeless story on life, love and fate. “Gill’s Bench” operates as not only a glistening, swaddling ode to the woman who will never know her true impact in this existence but a testament that things will work out exactly how they’re supposed to. “I saw the beauty of your mind / In every cloud shape that you’d find / Upon that hilltop,” sings Kerr, whose voice flows as clearly and profoundly as the mountain stream. It is an undeniably shiny treasure amidst so much seaward (musical) garbage.
