Taste Test: Judy Blank dreams big with a little ‘Mary Jane’
The soul-country newcomer eyes a U.S. breakthrough with her new song.

The songwriting muse can come from the most likely, or perhaps unlikely, of places. Turning to an ex-boyfriend’s slothful, unambitious ways, soul-country newcomer Judy Blank plants her torchy vocal cords amidst the haze of electric guitar and low-riding grooves. “Mary Jane” slides right into the side-pocket, as Blank herself slips into the role of the weed-dozing lover whose high falutin’ dreams of becoming a rockstar simply become smokey figments that vanish at the touch. “Education has never done the trick for me / But I’ve got an A in toxicology,” she sings, the hilarity of the situation hanging dry on the line. Her expert phrasing also seems filtered through a smoke screen, yet punches much harder.
“Mary Jane” is a sample of Blank’s latest album, Morning Sun, originally released overseas last fall. A stateside release is pending. She is set to perform at this year’s AmericanaFest.
