Taste Test: Julian Daniel is a fucking ‘Sad Boy’
The Toronto staple makes an emotional statement through distorted synth work.

Social media casts our mental health in absolute ruin. We peer through the shutters of another person’s life, but it’s never the full story. Behind closed doors, things are far worse than you might expect. Electro-pop purveyor Julian Daniel spirals out of emotional control with his aptly-titled song called “Sad Boy,” which sees him both confronting the truth of the internet and falling prey to it. “I’m just a sad boy / ‘Cause you left me,” he sings. His words spin like a vinyl record being scratched, and the synthetic handclaps and other percussion do little to alleviate his distorted reality. Voice a little bit punkish, he finds the only way to be truly heard is to buy into it all – even his vocals are filtered to further tighten the manufacture persona. “Watch me cry / Til my face is dry.”
“Sad Boy” is lifted from Daniel’s new EP, E-Boy, expected everywhere November 20.
