Taste Test: Katey Gatta realizes she’s in love with live version of ‘December’
The Canadian folk storyteller details the moment she realized she’s in love with a new song.
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones.
There’s a moment when it all hits you, like a lightning bolt in a mid-summer thunderstorm, that you realize love has seeped into your entire being. Your fingertips tingle, and your cheeks flush crimson red. At that point, you’re so caught up, there’s no way you could possible escape. Out of St. Catherines, Ontario, folk singer-songwriter Katey Gatta braids together memories of such a nosedive into romance on her stunning, smooth and soulful live rendition of “December,” which fades from a blustery ballad into a mid-tempo rollick. “It’s so cliche to fall in December / Frozen toes and promised endings / There are beginnings on the way,” she carves out with one motion of her lark-like voice. Her performance both strikes the heart and opens up the organ for a breathtaking new adventure. Truly a vision.
“December” kicks off Gatta’s brand new live-off-the-floor EP, Oddfellows | Live Sessions, out everywhere now.
