Premiere: Katie Austin is all tied-up with ‘Got Me Like’
The Nashville upstart finds “the one” with her new song.
Love at first sight is a surprisingly popular phenomenon in which two people’s orbits become intertwined. Fate wraps its talons around our lives, and no matter each individual step, the outcome is always the same. 2017 research out of the Netherlands suggests such happenstances are very real and very life-changing. Pop-country newcomer Katie Austin explores her own brush with destiny on “Got Me Like,” premiering today, the latest cut from her debut EP. “You don’t even know that I’m looking at you,” she sings, implementing the flush to her cheeks for a moment of blissful boldness.
“I know it sounds crazy / But I could be your baby for the rest of your life,” she later claims, as all her safeguards fall away into a blanket of drum beats and guitar chords. She’s so unapologetically windswept by Cupid’s arrow that she throws all caution to the wind to declare her unwavering adoration. She then confesses on the hook, “Got me feeling all kinds of ways…” The production is as elastic as her transparently neon heart, busting at the seams and seeping out onto the record, and Austin’s voice swells in time as she bares her soul in vivid and electric colors.
“[The song] is about that moment you first lay your eyes on someone and it makes your heart skip a beat,” Austin, who landed in the top 10 of the 2017 NASH Next competition, tells B-Sides & Badlands. “It’s a fun up-tempo song celebrating love at first sight.”
Out of Louisiana, Austin has spent ample time honing her skillset as a singer, songwriter and performer. She enjoyed a two-year stint down in Texas as entertainment director of the Cowboys Dance Hall, a position that also allowed her to headline countless shows for the rowdy, beer-swigging crowd. But it wasn’t until she relocated back to Nashville that stars aligned in ways she couldn’t possibly have dreamed. “Got Me Like” drops on the heels of several other new songs this week, including “Nirvana” and “Backyard.”
Austin issues her debut EP, Wild Child, this Friday (November 2).
