“A nightmare, you’re not there,” Kayls karate kicks open a chip-toothed door, situated somewhere between reality and fantasy. She walks cautiously across the threshold and soon tumbles down into blotchy synth-underworld. With “Bend & Bow,” she imagines her darkest nightmares lurching from shadowy, cobwebbed crevices into the real world. Production soon devolves into a witchy, intricate spell, layers caking on like thick purple smoke and her voice twists like vines. When her midnight reverie does finally clear, Kayls rises even more imposing than before.
