Taste Test: Kelly Hoppenjans is just busy ‘Growing My Hair’
The Nashville-based rocker wields her hair for a powerful statement in her new video.
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones
Lady Gaga so iconically howled, “I am my hair,” on her 2010 song. And she was right. There’s strength in hair; it’s not only a metaphor for personal growth and self-worth but it’s a physical embodiment of our willingness to discard what naysayers might spew against us. Bending her voice in such a stark, empowering lamplight, Nashville’s indie-rocker Kelly Hoppenjans utilizes various hair styles to make a profound statement on womanhood and controlling her own narrative. The visual for “Growing My Hair” sinks into true beauty YouTube trends and allows Hoppenjans to mesmerize the viewer into really understanding the emotional implications of hair care and design. “I keep washing my face / Just to paint it all up again,” she sings. In deconstructing societal conventions and expectations of women, she, in effect, finds her own warrior cry buried beneath “brush and pen,” as she later spits. It’s a commanding performance if ever you’ve seen one.
“Growing My Hair” anchors Hoppenjans’ debut LP, OK, I Feel Better Now (produced by the one and only Brandy Zdan), expected everywhere October 18.
