Life’s storm pours buckets of liquid ringlets upon our heads. Our bodies are worse for wear, but our skin still dances and prances in the sun that breaks ever so gently through puffing clouds. We remain as a sheathe of diamonds, destined to become more than what we are. Toronto’s synthwave band Language Artist find such solace in knowing the unknown that’s positioned to forge a new sense of self in the end. “Against the Wind” wrinkles between the then and now, as lead singer Kristen Cudmore meditates and relinquishes any sense of doubt. “And we’re together / But I still feel lonely,” she sings from the outset, situating the emotional heft as the very baseline of the club track. The lights flicker on, the snaps kick in and Cudmore’s ghostly vocal floats upon a bubble-laced sea of drums and the synthetic. She dives head first but emerges within moments to reclaim her newly-mutated identity. It’s a magical routine that’ll make you crumble.

“Against the Wind” serves as the first single from the duo’s upcoming album, Lemon/Lime, out this fall.
