Taste Test: Laura Jean Anderson pulls you closer with ‘On My Mind’

LA folk firebrand basks in new found romance with a previously unreleased track.

Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones

The highway before her was as an endless strip of her consciousness, bounding away from tangible times and places and leaving her emotionally drained. Following a string of lackluster shows, folk singer-songwriter Laura Jean Anderson sought solace in a budding new romantic endeavor. As she rumbled over the concrete, her journey dotting between Arizona and her return to Los Angeles, inspiration struck down as lightning into a sycamore, brambles shattering in splintered puzzle pieces. Anderson scribbled lyrics on her legs as best she could, and gas fill-ups proved to be apt moments to pull out her electric guitar for unplugged writing sessions. She soon constructed a lilting, heart-kissed ballad about love, and as one-take acoustic guitar washes up and over her, “On My Mind,” a leftover from last year’s debut EP, Lonesome No More, morphs into an enveloping riverbank prayer, a hymnal for replenishment of body and soul.

“On My Mind” is out everywhere now.
