Taste Test: Lauren Dejey defies the past with ‘Yours’
The electro-pop artist is beautifully haunting
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones
Lauren Dejey’s latest single opens with mournful wails that extend like ghostly hands to drag you in. Almost before you realise it, you’re slipping into a song of simple piano chords, punchy drumbeats and Dejey’s ethereal voice. Dejey’s vocals carry both sorrow and relief as she pours out the pain of the past. “I don’t want wanna be yours” Dejey repeats as harmonies croon in the background. The style is remiscent of Billie Eilish, mixing pop with something darker and more eerie. Dejey explains that part of her deliberately left the song as a blank slate for others to project their experiences onto. Despite this, “Yours” represents Dejey’s deeply personal journey of recovery and empowerment, and that spirit is tangible in every single word she sings.
