Taste Test: Leila Dandan serves up a relaxing lo-fi song in “Elephant”
This American singer-songwriter explores one-sided relationships in this indie-pop track
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones
As a multi-instrumentalist, Leila Dandan has mastered the art of creating a certain atmosphere around her songs. Her warm and welcoming tone invites the listener in, whilst the jaunty beat provided by the guitar lends some excitement and spice to the otherwise homely mix. Dandan’s style is somewhere between lo-fi and indie-pop, reminiscent of works such as Lizzy McAlpine and Cave Town. “Elephant” follows the same trajectory, addressing the nature and emotions that come with a one-sided relationship. “I need to address the elephant in the room/It don’t make sense for me to talk to you/You go on and on and on about yourself/And when you’re done you put me back on your shelf.” Despite the sad subject matter, there is nevertheless a calm sense of optimism and strength that comes with knowing your worth and that you can do better.
