Premiere: looseleaf toss up a handful of rainbow ‘Confetti’ for PRIDE month
The LA synth-pop duo unleash an arresting and potent queer anthem for PRIDE 2019.
PRIDE month is finally upon us, descending like a glittering cloudburst of rainbow confetti and sparkling diamonds. While our society has certainly come a very long way for queer representation, giving media coverage and high-profile opportunities for the marginalized, there remains a dark cloud hanging just over our heads. Look who inhabits the White House and how he got there. That being said, there’s no extinguishing our voices as they grow stronger and louder, and the queer army is piercing the barriers more and more these days. West Hollywood’s crazy kids and synth-pop icons looseleaf send up a royal plasma rocket with their new queer-pop anthem “Confetti,” premiering today, and just in time for PRIDE ’19.
“Our love is one for the radio / Blast the stereo / We light up / Our love is one for the movie screen / Or the magazine,” Anthony Marone and Wesley Edwards scorch the earth, planting their flag to let the powers that be know that they’ll never back down. Their mission is clearly underlined in every hue of the rainbow, and their art flourishes with such fearlessness, glowing ever brighter by the minute, that it emits light far more dazzling and penetrating than the sun. “We showed them all before that we’re not going nowhere / Our love is one for billboards / Let them stop and stare,” they tangle their voices in distortion and Nintendo bleeps and bloops. Their hearts pound and shred from their chests, and you can’t help but be wrapped in the kind of warmth that stems only from true and pure humanity.
Together, Edwards’ and Marone’s adoration for each other twists before exploding and sending the listener into a complete state of euphoria. “’Confetti’ was written to be a pride anthem. The LGBTQ+ community deserves more representation in the media,” the majestic pop duo write to B-Sides & Badlands over email. “We’ve come so far in gaining acceptance and want this song to challenge the idea of what is ‘normal.’ Be seen. Be heard. This month and always, we are proud, we are out… we light it up!”
With flames licking their heels, looseleaf remain bold and perceptive and a vision to destroy toxic forces that would love to wipe queer folk from existence. But we are thriving. “Why keep it in when the world is out / So we yell, and we scream, and we shout,” they ring the alarm with fizzy luminescence. The world ain’t ready for this jelly…
“Confetti” (dropping this Saturday, June 1) follows on the heels of the duo’s new EP, Paper Cuts, out everywhere now.
