Premiere: Lost Stars flushed by new love with ‘Once in a Lifetime’
Alt-pop band celebrate the rush of new-found romance with their new single.
It’s so easy to get jaded in this life. We wade through the muck to feel the sun on our skin, the warmth of romance, the adrenaline rush of the unexpected. But if you’ve spent any amount of time navigating the watery depths, sometimes suffocating and gasping for truth, you know more than anyone how dangerous such endeavors can be. Alt-pop trio Lost Stars even embrace such barbed edges, snagging their hearts on breakups and breakdowns, with their new single “Once in a Lifetime,” a club banger that sees them finally have the breakthrough for which they’ve so desperately sought. “Neon haze in the skyline, you’re reaching for my hand / Been here a thousand times, but it feels like a brand new dance,” frontman Damian Malnar heaves on the opening stanza, his moment of true clarity. “A lone wolf broke off from the pack, no this wasn’t what I planned…”
Alongside bandmates Charley Holden (guitar, bass) and Trey Warner (guitar), the Kansas-bred outfitters suit up for a fluorescent-shimmering decree as they feel the wash of ardor flush their cheeks and line their jaws with a rosy glow. “Two kids, a pocket of dreams, and a pile of student debt / Future’s uncertain, but you’re the one thing that makes sense,” sings Malnar, who situates the risk of new-found love-sickness with the edge of glory and absolution. “What is this feeling?” he whispers to himself as the beat swells and drops on the eardrums. Now Nashville transplants, the band, who have opened for the likes of COIN and A R I Z O N A, harvest the vibrantly jaunty spirit of The 1975 and lovelytheband with a good coating of 5 Seconds of Summer charm.
Lost Stars surface as their own entity, though, an enticing new pop creature ready and capable of shifting he conversation. “As we grow, our hearts get hardened by the many formative and often disappointing encounters we have with love or the lack of,” the band writes to B-Sides & Badlands over email about the song, the first of many coming this year. “After all, the heart can be pretty fickle. But we hope this song gives people the faith that they are unique and deserving of love. So, don’t settle for less and don’t let that child-like wonder fade, because you never know when you’ll meet someone that changes everything.”
“Once in a Lifetime” anchors the band’s new EP, Sirens + Light, out July 5.
