Boombox Blitz: lotusbliss construct eerie sci-fi world in ‘The Horror’ video
The indie-pop band utilize stylized horror imagery for a griping new tale.
Welcome to Boombox Blitz, an artist spotlight series showcasing overlooked singers, songwriters and musicians who are quietly taking over the world.
Horror imagery can elicit a fierce, emotional response other styles of visual storytelling can not. Take indie-pop band lotusbliss‘ new video, “The Horror,” as a prime example. Against bright, polished synths and electric guitar, the group — made of brothers Seth, Josh, and Adam — conjures up a deliciously cinematic sci-fi concept (think Cronenberg) with a silver-masked protagonist (played by artist and jewelry creator Mutsa James) wandering a practically post-apocalyptic world.
“Oh darling, this time I know it’s all my fault / Behind this fake smile, I’m suffocating still,” the trio sings, layering on shiny harmony work. Their words fall like broken glass across their instruments with full-force, a relentless cascade to further puncture the video’s super-charged design. Such lyrical anvils bleeds in eerie shadows, and even when James’ character sinks into a purple-hued lake, waist-deep, there seems to be something tortured and mercilessly hopeless about it all. “I wish that I perceived things differently, but I know me, or at least i think I do / I wish that I perceived things differently, but I know me,” they cower later on, guiding the listener into their emotional rage.
“The Horror” follows last year’s EP, A Good Death is a Beautiful Thing, about which we interviewed the group in-depth around personal wreckage and funneling pain into beautiful musical mosaics. Read our Q&A here.
