Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones

We weirdly live in a society that has a hard time allowing and embracing even dark emotions. You can be sad, angry, or whatever. It’ll be OK, and the world won’t end. Producing duo loyalties teams up with vocalist Emma Oliver, who you probably know from TikTok, for the sad bop we’ve all needed this year. “Sad Sometimes” is the perfect mid-pandemic weeper, a piano ballad drenched in soft synths and percussion, and Oliver’s voice rumbles like a summer rain. “When will you ever learn / No, I don’t think I can manage / But you still let me down,” she sobs. “Don’t you know I hate this feeling / ‘Cause if you really love me, you’d let me go.” Heartache and aftermath and all, Oliver pleads for permission to wallow in the emotion. Sometimes, you’ve gotta feel that sadness and simply let it flood out of you. It’s ok. Embrace it. Feeling so deeply is essential to life.
