Taste Test: Malin Pettersen lets herself feel on ‘Cry If I Want To’
Pettersen finds strength in her emotions.

In our society, crying is seen as a weakness. But Malin Pettersen is here to reclaim her emotions, letting herself feel whatever she feels. “I’ve been getting by on my own, pretend it’s not real,” her collaborator Bergljot Bjella sings in the second verse. Their voices tangle together like vines, a bit thorny yet plush and flourishing. “They say that you gotta try to be strong, I know / But how can you hold on when it won’t let you go,” sings Pettersen, her voice crystalline and subdued. In picking up the pieces of her heart, she draws them closer to her and nourishes them. She unapologetically allows her emotions to grow and effectively comes to understand herself on a much deeper level. What a journey.
