The ruins build around her kneecaps. Smoke swirls, rocks tumble, and her heart lies shattered into a million fragments. Such is the case with “Ruins,” an ethereal, gaseous cut about a failing relationship. “But looking back I see that our foundations were so shaky / There was no way we would make it as the cracks begin to show before we tumble down,” sings Mari Dangerfield. Her voice, as light as a feather, topples across the melody, as though it too must succumb to gravity. From her new EP, Eco-Fever, “Ruins” quakes with the sort of pain you don’t soon forget.
