Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones

If you’ve never really had to fight tooth and nail, it can be hard to wrap your head around what it exactly means to truly survive the worst of life. Upon hitting a necessary reset on her entire existence, indie-rock goddess Maria Neckham realizes the dark, swirling clouds that once encircled her body have finally lifted, and she steps into the bright light of renewal far more self-possessed and resilient. “Happier” is a front kick to the chest. It’s busting down the damn door and letting all the splintered shards to scatter across a wasteland of misery. It is reclaiming a life that had been slowly vanishing. “I’m happier than ever,” she hits the accelerator and leaves the listener choking on dust. We cough and gasp, but we like it. Neckam smacks you across the head and grabs you by the throat. The world now belongs to her and her alone.

“Happier” anchors Neckam’s new album, The Leap, out everywhere later this year.
