Taste Test: Marsden & Richardson’s ‘Outsider’ is a song that strikes you to the core
The British duo break away from their roots with a musical affirmation for the misfits
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones
There are songs that sometimes make you feel like they’re singing about your life without knowing anything about you. This is very much the reaction I had to “Outsider” by Marsden & Richardson. The duo are members of the much heavier Band of Skulls rock group, but have decided to temporarily step away to focus on this new style of music. Their breakout single is immediately striking, with soaring orchestral string sections, melodic piano, and bassy drumbeats that count as the heartbeat of the song. Emma Richardson’s stunning vocals cut to the quick as she unleashes emotionally charged lyrics filled to the brim with hope, serenity and empathy: “You’re an outsider/you’re running wild/you’re against the tide/you’re on my side.” Russel Marsden explains that their songs were so personal that they had to find a balance between being open and being able to perform them without getting overwhelmed with emotion. “Outsider” struck me to the core in the best possible way, and I’m excited to see their evolution from their rocking roots to this more melodic stripped down style.
