Taste Test: Matt Jaffe and Bill Plympton combine visual and auditory art to create ‘Voodoo Doll’

Musician and animator team up to explore bad relationships

Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones

It’s rare that you get a story told so excellently through music and visuals at the same time, but “Voodoo Doll” is a rare exception. Matt Jaffe is a singer/songwriter from San Francisco with 5 albums and countless songs to his name. Bill Plympton is an Academy Awards nominated animator and cartoonist, and together, they make a force to be reckoned with. Using the metaphor of the voodoo doll, Jaffe explores the pain and devastation that love can cause, to brutal effect. “She has got my voodoo doll/She’ll throw it off a waterfall/It’s the only way she knows at all to say she loves me.” It’s a slower and more careful song than you might expect, with a vocal style remiscent of David Bowie. Plympton’s animations underscore the ruthless lines that Jaffe sings, with the usual creativity and digital storytelling that Plympton brings to the table. This is a fantastic song, a worthy collaboration, and will absolutely rip your heart out if you’ve been in any kind of toxic relationship.
