Often we don’t end up where we thought we would, but that’s not always a bad thing. Matthew Gilbert’s latest song ‘Promised Land’ explores the concept of fate, destiny and accepting the unexpected from a Christian perspective. The chorus culminates in the confession: “Not what I thought of the Promised Land”. The song is scattered with Biblical metaphors, reminding us that the greatest people didn’t always end up where they planned to be. “Promised Land” is flawless in its production, an impressive feat considering its 15 musicians and 201 active tracks. Despite the relaxing instrumentals and soaring strings, the vocals are the gem in the crown of “Promised Land”. Gilbert’s voice leads the charge, ringing with calm powerful serenity. He is supported by a stunning group of singers, who layer harmonies in an elegant backwash of emotion. Gilbert should be rightly proud of the masterpiece he has created.
