Taste Test: Mayfair Lady strips away the fantasy with ‘Reality Check’
The indie-pop artist gets intensely personal about a past lifestyle
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones
At first Mayfair Lady’s new song sounds like the typical lifestyle brag expected of successful pop artists. “Sometimes I get drunk on my mouthwash just for fun/and I tripped out on the stairs to look messed up/and I go to crazy parties/watching people getting naughty” she admits, shadowed by an ominous-sounding piano. But things are not as they first appear, as the mighty orchestral-sounding instrumentals swell with Mayfair Lady’s potent voice culminating in a high-powered yet lyrically vulnerable chorus. “Trapped in the deep/Black hole there on the floor/Can’t get up anymore” she confesses. It is this deconstruction of fantasy that Mayfair Lady hopes to bring to others. “Deep down I knew this lifestyle only fed more into my sorrow, but I kept on going” she explains. “Someone out there may need to listen to it… someone who may need a ‘‘Reality Check.”
