Summer romances rarely last. In fact, they fade away like leaves turning brown, red, and orange in autumn. “Do you think we got too much of a good thing?” croons Melissa Bel. Her angelic voice succumbs to the brisk changing of the seasons, pouring the sorrow on thick and bracing for the impenetrable loneliness. With “Summer So Long,” Bel waxes equal pars wistful and joyful, relishing in the memories for as long as she possibly can. “Now that you’re going / Wasn’t easy moving on,” she sings. It’s as much about the seasons as it is the romance, still stinging her tongue, and basking in its vestiges is all she knows to do. In a pandemic world, it feels even more mournful than one might anticipate.
