Taste Test: Midnight Vesta let the past roam free on new song, ‘Complicated Pony’
The indie-folk band reflect upon a past lover.
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones
“Pressure can be the death of love” is as a profound statement as one can get. Love is not cut from perfectly fresh construction paper that you glue and decorate with beads and glitter. It’s far more complicated, and sometimes more tragic, than that. Indie-folk outfit Midnight Vesta hop aboard a steaming locomotive in search of the truth. “Complicated Pony” analyzes a past relationship, one that was full of love but ultimately proved to be too toxic for both parties, and so, they had to cut the binding ties and seek out a new way. “Broken down doors / And ghosts in bed,” they observe – their yellowed and matchstick-scented words melt into one’s trauma that only spiraled further out of control. Yet it’s not weighted to the bottom by bitterness or spite; it’s laced with stunning and compassionate warmth.
“Complicated Pony” samples the band’s second album, expected everywhere in 2020.
