Taste Test: MIKA drips like ‘Ice Cream’
The funk-pop master gets the listener (sugar) high with his new banger.
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones
Sometimes, you’ve just gotta get lost in powdery confections. Lemon pops, licorice whips, cherry poppin’ bubble gum, rivers that run chocolate. Willy Wonka knew what he was talking about. Even sour times of life require proper self-care with an undeniable sugar-high. Pulling on the strings of ’80s funk and avant glitter-pop, MIKA seeks a euphoric escape from a two-year writing process, which saw him tear through personal turmoils, and delivers a late-night groove that puts anything on mainstream radio to shame. “Laughing at my body / As it’s sweltering with heat,” he lifts his lips in a saucy pout. The beats and synths rub together, quickly erupting into a sensual drip, drip, drip along waffle ridges lined with delicious dark chocolate. Provocative and limber, MIKA’s bid for Song of the Summer not only turns the knob right off but it’ll bake your groove thang to extremes, too.
“Ice Cream” anchors his upcoming fifth album, My Name is Michael Holbrook, out October 4.
