Chasing down dreams of any sort takes an immense level of dedication. Whether it’s a new job or a sprouting relationship, we sacrifices parts of ourselves to make it work. Framed around “Marriage,” an apt moniker for a new song, folk singer-songwriter Mike Riley hones in on Toronto-area drag queen named BOA and the innate gusto it takes to perform like its the last chance. “When you get tired of all the back and forth / When I am done with all your slamming doors / When will we finish trying to settle scores / That’s when you know that there ain’t nothing left to lie for,” he sings. The country tear trembles in the mix, an earthy tone juxtaposed against neon lights and the allure of the stage. It’s an arresting, empowering performance, both vocally and visually, that we desperately need in these trying, altogether tiring, times.
“Marriage” is another sample to Riley’s upcoming EP, expected in 2020.
