“You gotta keep moving,” sing Catherine Miles and Jay Mafale. Known together as Miles & Mafale, the folksy NY-based duo light a match beneath the feet of equality. Within its rhythmic bones, “March” carries with it all the weight of the present moment while pushing the needle forward. “Left foot, right foot,” the duo rally, their voices tangled as one.

Given the state of the world in 2024, “March” emerges as a crucial testament to what it means to be a woman in the United States. “Progress is often painfully slow. However, it is also inexorable,” the duo tells B-Sides & Badlands. This is an amazingly diverse country in terms of its topography, climate, and culture ¾ and those elements influence and affect each other.”

“The women of our country fully reflect this beautiful diversity, while at the same time, societally and culturally, across generations, women have also had very similar experiences no matter where they live,” the duo add.

With the accompanying visual, premiering today, Miles & Mafale eyed the song’s “driving rhythm and lyrics that evolve from reflection into fierce determination,” they explain. “The momentum of the ‘view from a car window’ helps underscore those elements. The expressions on the faces of the women in the video… they say it all.”

It seemed appropriate then to drop the video on International Women’s Day, a celebration of how far we’ve come and how far there still is yet to go. “Could there be a more appropriate day to release the video of a song that is so wholly women-centric?” the duo says. “[The song] speaks to the shared experience of women across the United States, delivering a story of the pain and struggle women face, while also celebrating the determination and strength women embody.”

“March” samples the band’s 2023 studio album, Be Brave.
