The rising pop star examines the truth about American culture.

There’s great irony in Moncrieff extrapolating “Macarena,” a definining hit of the ’90s, for his own song. Its fever dream melody (laced around obsessive lyrics) operates well in the rising pop star’s own takedown of American culture. The aptly-titled “America” bangs along the well-trodden rhythm, his voice pouring like hot tar and melting away to oil-dipped barebones. “Nothing comes from nothing in the land of the free,” he whispers, an almost off-hand comment. Musically bold, and lyrically incisive, Moncrieff’s timely tablespoon of medicine arrives when delusion runs rampant on the back of perhaps the most important election of our time.
