Taste Test: Mystery Friends experiment with vibrant synth sounds in ‘Someday’
The Washington artists drop a wistful electropop delight
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones
Mystery Friends have moved a long way away from the classic pop and rock sound they initially started out with. Armed with swelling synths and wistful lyrics, their latest track “Someday” is somehow nostalgic and forward-facing at the same time. With a style similar to CHVRCHES, Mystery Friends’ gritty use of electronics brings a synthwave-eque vibe to their work. Abby Sevcik shines as the frontwoman and main vocalist of the band. “You can always run/but you can’t always come back/what you running from?” The vocals are steeped in introspection, hope and power, shadowed by grounding harmonies. Together, the Mystery Friends band paint a picture of looking back on past memories, but forward to future possibilities.
