Taste Test: Nation of Language laughs at our reality in ‘The Grey Commute’
The synthpop band satirises our modern world
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones
I think by this point, everyone is about done with capitalism as it stands. The drudgery of the 9 to 5 workweek is hitting especially hard after the pandemic. But the indie pop band Nation of Language have captured the sentiment beautifully in their synthpop song “The Grey Commute”. Wonderfully nostalgic, with a 1970s electro feel, the band mixes old and new in their dynamic single, taking us on a journey from the rhythmic constance of everyday life, to the creative possibilities of a world beyond The Grind™. The lead singer is poignant and punches each beat with unerring accuracy, adding to the bouncy feel of the song. I love the vibe of this single and I have a feeling I’ll be listening to it a lot over the next few weeks.
