Taste Test: Nervo come out of the truth quite ‘Sober’
The electro-pop duo provoke dusty blues and juicy pop with their sobering new club track.
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones.
The truth can be terrifying. It’s like knowing a fang-toothed monster is harboring beneath your bed, and all you can do is pull up the covers and wait for it to sink its ivories into your skin. That’s the haunting revelation Melbourne-born electronic duo NERVO (of Mim and Liv) dissect with their sweat-inducing new banger, “Sober.” In ratcheting up the emotions, they seek out the pleasure of the dance floor to wash down the bitter taste of a past relationship. “Nothing makes me sober like you did / Nothing pulls me under like you, babe,” the admission escapes their lips with both heavy melancholy and the kind of liberation that’ll surely only fuel them way into the midnight hours. While the pair continue inciting a house riot with sweltering beats, there’s a genre-busting tone dragging just below the surface, much in the same fashion as ZZ Ward’s striking blend of western and pop. Here, Nervo conjure up a torrential hurricane of blues, electro-house and bubblegum, leaving the listener insatiable for more.
“Sober” is just the latest in a string of singles this year, coming on the heels of “Emotional.”
