We hide behind black mirrors most of the time. These days, social media allows us to slither between blurred moral lines, particularly when it comes to fake news or fandom culture, and we rarely have fear of any real consequence. Out of Raleigh, North Carolina, roots-rock outfit New Sweat unleash their frustrations over the surge of technology and modern emotions. With “I’m Not One to Talk,” paired with a Twitter-centric lyric video, frontman Garrett Cummings slices open the conversation with a razor-sharp focus, his voice both smooth and piercing. His words sever even deeper. “I could save this whole world with this guitar / Like every good guy with his gun / I could run my mouth and tell you all just what to do / But I’ll let these politicians run…,” he soaks syllables with little malice. It’s a plea for understanding, and he then alerts the listener that perhaps stepping back is a much better option than heated confrontation.
“I’m Not One to Talk” is ripped from the band’s new album, Machines, out everywhere now.
