We are creatures of habit. Even when we know it’s futile to spin our wheels in place, perhaps registering that moving on is in our best interest, we want what’s easy and comfortable. Texas musician and songwriter Nicholas Altobelli combs through the still-smoking ashes of his heartache, an acoustic guitar his only real weapon against the damaging windstorm, on his song called “Tell Me What I Got to Do.” The video, directed by Cole Mitchek, takes place in the frigid grasp of winter, covered in a sepia light. The tone is severe and detached, appropriate to Altobelli’s downcast spirit and a vocal performance that buckles the knees. “I was hiding in the shadows like I always did,” he sings. He teeters on tired feet back through the past, and the visual not only gives the music even more weight but underscores the devastating nature of a broken heart.
“Tell Me What I Got to Do” is lifted from Altobelli’s new album, Vertigo, out everywhere now.
