Love of animals is unconditional. No matter how terrible your day has been, pets see the beauty still lingering on your skin. They’re unconcerned about the problems and turmoil of the world, and human beings could certainly learn a thing or two. Aussie pop mechanic Nick de la Hoyde taps into that primal, uncontaminated admiration with his soon-to-smash single “Animals,” paired with a gloriously warm and playful new visual. Donning a panda head, he buckles underneath the weight of self-wrought melancholy, and that sorrow is even laced throughout the production, often feeling downright weepy. As he navigates a world crumbling beneath the devastation, he turns to budding romance to heal his wounds and soon discovers something far deeper. “Love is turning us into animals,” he croons, allowing the new intoxication to rip through his body. “Won’t you tear me apart,” he later sends up a cry into the effervescent mix. It’s the kind of concoction that sets a course right for superstardom, and we can’t wait to see exactly how Hoyde takes over the world next.

“Animals” whets the appetite for Hoyde’s upcoming debut LP, A Beautiful Mess, out this summer.
