A night out wrought a moment of deep reflection. Nick Gill began wondering what it must feel like to be married in your 30s. With “Married by Now,” the singer-songwriter delves into those emotions, from sadness to regret, and attempts to find the answers swirling in a bar’s amber limelight. “Just looking for my queen, someone I can love more than anything,” he sings, weeping into his third beer. Saturday night grows long, and his tears fill up his glass. “My buddy John just got engaged / He’s moving out to the country,” Gill continues. “Maybe I’m just not the marrying type…” His words fall from his lips like diamonds, shimmering before they scatter on the hardwood. “I want to know what commitment looks like,” he sings later on. Gill might not find all the answers in “Married by Now,” but he’s certainly closer than he was before. Maybe today is the day.
