Ghosts are a very real phenomenon. Believe it or not, bones of past lives rattle together and often wobble between this world and the next. Many are trapped in purgatory until “unfinished business” is soon complete. Nikki Speake, of southern gothic Americana band Nikki & the Phantom Callers, extends her voice through the threshold to honor tortured souls of her hometown. “They’ve Never Walked Through Shadows” heaves as misery-stricken creatures that may never find true peace ⏤ a terribly sinister growl slowly rumbles and tears ever skyward in the production. A funeral march clomps heartily in the muddy earth and soon descends into maniacal distortions, whipping the vocal harmony work into a chilling frenzy by final frame. “Hey there, you raven-haired beauty / Your pink cheeks shine in this light,” sings Speake to carve out the paranormal tale with eerie detail.
“They’ve Never Walked Through Shadows” is the kind of song that’ll make your Halloween quite a treat.
