Taste Test: Nothing in Common reflects on goodbyes with ‘Starting Over’
Swedish band drops the atmosphere with this indie-electro song
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones
Leaving loved ones behind is a painful reality, and Nothing in Common perfectly captures the images of a heartbroken goodbye. Unlike other love songs, “Starting Over” has a delicate complexity to it, in both theme and musicality – the singer still wishes their ex-lover well and and still cares for them. “Don’t wanna leave but here I’m saying goodbye/My heart and lips don’t seem to be sharing minds” sings the main writer of the band, Alice Edstrom. This complexity is delightfully sprinkled throughout the song, with harmonies, synth and layered vocal tracks creating a thick atmosphere of emotion that hangs over the indie-electro song like dense fog. Along with Edstrom, musicians Pelle Sundin and Bo Bjorkman do a fantastic job at catching your ear and refusing to let go. This is a song I could easily listen to over and over again, just to watch the pictures that these musicians paint.
